volunteers in action

Volunteers planted trees along Judge Perez Drive Saturday, March 12, 2011, through a Curb Appeal program with the SBPG Parks and Parkways Commission and the Greater New Orleans Foundation Neighborhood Initiatives.
.

Several neighborhood associations and many volunteer residents joined together to plant the trees.  Although the Curb Appeal beautification program has begun on the parish's three major thoroughfares,  future projects may include pocket parks inside the neighborhoods.

Save the Date

Save the Date

There will be an evening community townhall meeting about the recent US EPA consent decree with Murphy Oil. We have not received any information about the date or location, but expect the meeting to be sometime in late March~early April.  It may be published in the local newspaper, hopefully with a few weeks notice.

The refinery has marked the greenspace in the Ventura-Despaux neighborhood for placement of an ambient air monitor. The consent decree requires pollution control technology that should, after 5 years, bring about an improvement to the flaring in the neighborhood . A statement was made in a CAP meeting that another refinery expansion plan may occur during the installation of these pollution controls.  The flare gas recovery system should be completed by late December 2016. A supplemental project will cover two waste water treatement tanks, reducing VOC emissions by almost a ton per year.

Coastal Residents Health Survey

WWNO News Report    by Eileen Fleming

"They have no plan whatsoever for our health, the people's health. And that's what I'm trying to do - to get people together and try to find funding to have these people tested because then that's going to be the solid proof that we're being poisoned."   --  Betty Dowd, a 14-year resident of Grand Isle.
